There are many types of footwear on the market today depending
on what activities you enjoy and what suits your needs as an

Flip-Flops (thongs) are very prominent in the surfer culture.
They are becoming everyday footwear in the cities as well.

Wedding Attire for an Outdoor Wedding

At an outdoor wedding site you generally have two things to walk
on - grass or concrete. There is the occasional gravel path or
stones of some kind, perhaps even good old-fashioned dirt. (in a
church or other indoor venue, you have a clean, hard surface
that can be easily covered with a satin runner to keep the train
clean). This presents some interesting challenges when choosing
wedding attire.

Many wedding gowns come with trains - those yards of material on
the back of the dress that are supposed to flow behind the bride
as she walks up and down the aisle. Beautiful? Yes. Many are
beaded and bejeweled on a gown that ranges in price from
hundreds to thousands of dollars.

She also has selected beautiful satin shoes with four inch
heels. Her attendants have the same style shoes in the colors
that match their gowns. Gorgeous and stylish!

And the processional begins. The officiant is several hundred
feet away standing with the groom across an expanse of freshly
cut grass that probably has been recently watered. The goal is
for everyone to maneuver through the grass in those spiked heels
and arrive safely beside the officiant.

The bride's maids, followed by the maid or matron of honor come
in and with each step the spiked heels go down into the grass.
(As the waiting officiant I often think the gardeners should pay
the wedding party for aerating the lawn). It is not only
difficult for the women to walk in the grass with spiked heels
but also leaves the shoes with green and brown stains from the
grass and dirt.

When the wedding party is arranged appropriately on each side of
the officiant, the runner, generally made of paper, is rolled
down the grassy aisle and the bride comes in, beautiful in her
stunning gown with the long train. Her spiked heals sink down
catching in the runner and she hangs on to dad to keep from
falling. Sometimes the heels sink down through the runner almost
tripping the bride and, like her attendants, leaving stains on
her shoes. The train, full behind her, is wider than the runner
and the outer sides of the train glide across the grass.

If no one removes the runner prior to the processional, the
entire wedding party has to navigate the runner on their way
out. It is not safe but it does lend some comic relief.

Now come pictures. The train is probably dragged over more lawn,
more gravel and more dirt. By the time she is ready for the
reception or dinner, the underside of the train is probably
quite dirty and grass stained.

This is not made up. As an officiant I see this over and over.
The solution? The solution is three fold and very, very simple:

1. Purchase a beautiful gown that has no train.

2. Wear shoes that don't sink down into the ground. (At one
wedding the bride and her attendants wore white flip-flops and
the groom and his attendants wore black ones. They were dressed
elegantly. The flip-flops did not detract from the elegance and
everyone walked safely up and down the aisle).

3. Never use a paper runner. (In my opinion these are unsafe
both inside and outside).

It seems like safety should outrank high heels and trains but
this is just one officiant's opinion. The choice is always the
bride's.

Ballroom Dancing-Let's Talk Shoes

Ballroom dancing, like most other sports, (and if you don't
believe it's a sport, get out there and do swing dancing for an
hour or so and see if you don't work up a sweat) has it's own
'uniform' of sorts, including the style of clothing as well as
the type of shoes worn. That varies, of course, depending on
whether you're going to class, a studio dance or a competition.

I often hear the question - 'What kind of shoes should I wear to
dance in? It's my opinion that the very best choices for
footwear are those designed especially for ballroom dancing and
even more specifically for the exact dance style you plan to be
doing. But until such time as you decide to reward yourself with
that sexy strappy Latin shoe with the Cuban heel for the cha-cha
or rhumba, or a gorgeous sequined number for the elegant waltz,
practicing in street shoes is perfectly acceptable.

Now...having said that, let me quickly add that not just any
street shoe will do. Styles that should be avoided include
anything with rubber soles, like sneakers, (they just don't give
you the slide you need on the floor), open-toes (for obvious
reasons, you're still learning and chances are so is your
partner), such as sandals or (heaven forbid) flip-flops! And
yes, I've actually seen people show up for class wearing flip
flops! Try to execute a double spin in those!

But, if you have a leather soled shoe, such as a loafer-type, or
for men, a dress shoe style, these will usually accomodate you
nicely. The most important factor is that they must be
comfortable and not tight on your feet. If your feet are aching,
you'll soon be unable to focus on anything else.

The dance floor itself plays a part in the comfort level of your
feet. Some studios have the proper flooring for dancing, which
usually includes a cushiony, almost spring-like underflooring.
This type floor enables dancers to dance for hours without
feeling much effect...IF their shoes are also adequately
comfortable. But some dance studios are built on a concrete
slab, with only a layer of hardwood over it, and on those floors
your poor feet will take a pounding.

When the time comes that you decide to invest in a good pair of
dance shoes, shop around a bit. Prices and styles vary and the
selection is almost endless. Prices can range from $30-50 on the
low end to well over $200 on the high end. Dance shoes are
designed not only to be best suited for dancing, but to enhance
the overall aesthetics of your dance...you'll simply look better
out there on the floor.

Many of the features of dance shoes serve practical purposes.
The ankle straps are not just eye-appealing, they actually help
your feet stay firmly in your shoes. Some of the pump styles
have elasticized rims on the uppers which 'hugs' the shoe to
your foot. The heels are different heights and widths, depending
on the style of dance they're designed for. The soles are
typically suede, which gives you the ability to literally
'glide' as you dance across the floor, and are especially
helpful when doing turns and spins.

To preserve the life of these suede soles, dance shoes should
never be worn outside. Two other accessories that will extend
the wear of your dance shoes - a carrying case for transporting
them, and a sole brush to lift the nap of the suede every couple
of weeks or so.

One final note - dance shoes (or any other shoe, for that
matter) should be tried on in the late afternoon or evening,
when your feet are typically at their largest. You'll be
requiring a lot of your feet over the span of your dancing
experience...treat them right, dress them properly and you'll
have a great foundation on which to build a lifetime of ballroom
dancing.

Breakfast at Tiffany's, epitomising diamond allure and American
chic. Well, Tiffany's stylish jewellery has stood the test of
changing times and this year celebrates 150 years of its journey
through jewellery design and craftsmanship with a special
exhibition at Somerset House. From the early 1830s, Tiffany's
had a humble existence as a souvenir and fancy goods store. In
one its first catalogues, the range of French jewellery was
tucked behind a host of goods; fine stationery, French perfumes
and French sugar plums.

Right from the very start, Tiffany's creator, Charles Lewis
Tiffany was an innovator not just in jewellery design but the

for $1000. Tiffanys started off keeping it simple; silver
jewellery in understated styles.

By the 1830s, European designs had become hugely fashionable

more, there were international exhibitions and crafts of other
countries were being recognised. Tiffany kept up with the trends
particularly with the discoveries of precious materials
throughout the century and consistently kept to designing silver
jewellery.

In 1840, Tiffanys popularity escalated. Tiffany profited from
the revolutionary turmoil in France when diamonds and jewellery
were being sold at very good prices. By the nineteenth century,
the emerging middle classes and the commercial elite wanted to
enhance their status by owning possessions and looked to the
aristocrats and royalty for inspiration. Tiffanys had a distinct
American style but looked to Europe and the courts of Europe for
patriotic items of jewellery like silver spurs with matching
stirrups.

Womens fashion further influenced jewellery designs. In the
1850s, jewellery became bold and brassy and towards the end of
the nineteenth century when the corset and lighter dress fabrics
evolved, there were more lighter jewellery designs; diamond
jewellery mounted in platinum with a move away from silver and
gold.

After the first world war and the art deco period, women were no
longer seen to follow rigid social code and conventions; they
wore shorter skirts, applied makeup in public and smoked so
jewels were schematic colour combinations.

For Tiffany the history of success has repeated itself. Tiffany
of acclaimed international fame has never failed to stun the
world with its great international exhibitions of innovative
jewellery. The Tiffany brand has combined the aesthetic of
European fashion with an original and distinctly American chic.

Even though diamonds have been the heart of the Tiffany, one of
the exhibition highlights is the exquisite diamond and pearl
designs of the 1870s. At this exhibition, ugly designs sit
alongside beautiful ones, making this one of the greatest
displays of wealth ever created.

Shoes have basically one purpose - protection. Protecting the
feet from cold, heat and other atmospheric elements. Basically
footwear was developed centuries ago to keep man's feet from
being injured. This fundamental purpose is overshadowed when it
comes to womens shoes. It all flies out the window in favor of
fashion.

Cancel all that talk about protecting your feet. Any old shoe
that you throw on will do this in a relatively competent way.

I'm not suggesting that men don't have your appreciation of

womens shoes is a two-way street. Many women of course, by shoes
with this specifically in mind.

On the other hand, I do not want for a minute pretend that men
really understand what in the world is going on with their
female counterparts when it comes to footwear. There is
something very special about womens shoes that draws a lady to
the store regardless of the fact of whether she needs them or
not. And the majority of cases she probably doesn't.

However, she probably feels like she does. She can tell you that
precious few things really replaces the feeling of locating the
perfect pair of pumps in just the right shade of burgundy that
matches the scarf that's been sitting in the bottom of her
dresser drawer. The scarf no doubt, was purchased knowing that
there must be a perfect match in women's shoes somewhere in the
universe that she had to seek out.

It may take many years to find these perfect shoes to match that
scarf, but it will be worth the wait. One fine day the designers
of womens shoes will come through and match that scarf. Besides,
the girl is in the hunt anyway. The hunt takes awhile, but
nothing worthwhile comes easy. This may not be understood by
most men, who seemed to have the market cornered on impatience.

As I said before, the great appeal womens shoes is shopping for
them. The footwear represents that final touch, that one detail
that says, "I've got it together." They say it all, I have style
I have class I have taste.

Or maybe it is something altogether different. Come to think of

for SLIMMING aren't we. We all know our body-type intimately, so
get real and make the right choice to flatter.

For some of us the look will be most excellent and slimming, for
others of us, this may not necessarily be the case. For those of
us who run from the skinny- don't despair, there are cool
trouser styles a plenty this year! Skinny jeans are not for you?
Move on then. But, if you haven't yet made the skinny jean
commitment and are just now choosing to head away from the
baggier boyfriend style jeans, and to embrace the skinny . . .
Well then, here are a few helpful hints for you in your skinny
jean adventure:

- Legs less than pencil thin? Choose your shoes wisely. A chunky
boot is the best bet. Keep up the balancing act. Your goal is to
make those legs look slim and to enhance your height, thus your
slimness as well. If you choose tiny, cute, little shoes, you
are only going to draw emphasis to your less tiny,
less-than-little legs.

- Be brave! Roll up your skinnies to reveal footwear that is
anything but understated. Does the roll-job need to be perfect?
No way. An imperfect roll belies a bit of artistic, confident
and casual chicness. - Got thighs? Disguise and hide, while
still wearing your fashionable skinny jeans. Do this by wearing
a cool long white top, tunic tops, jersey tops, blouses with
volume or even a chunky cardigan sweater. Or you can do it up
with a super dress to middle thigh range or even longer. Dresses
can be any style: shirt-dress, empire, wrap, smocked or baby
doll. You know which styles are your best friends! Pair these
with your new pair of skinnies and all the problem areas will be
covered.

- Choose a pair of skinnies wisely. Don't go less than 2% Lycra
to retain shape. Also, despite your aversion to ankle zippers .
. . remember that those will help you pass those oversize
tootsies through the leg-holes!

- Don't skimp on a perfect fit. Finding yours will not be easy,
so be prepared to try a bunch on in the beloved dressing room.
Your perfect fit will eventually come to the forefront with a
bit of patience. Your perfect skinny may actually be a slim-fit
(if you're not pencil thin.)

- Color is key. Go for the darkest of blue. If black is for you,
then black will be smartest at it's very best, that would be jet
black. Avoiding the dirty, washed out shades to keep your skinny
look sharp. Like it's been said to me, "Keep it simple stupid."

- If you are uncomfortable with the hip-factor that you call
your own, avoid completing your look with a trendy belt over
your skinny jeans.

- If you have skinny-jean legs, but a less than skinny or
balanced torso, you may want to skip the skinny jean look
altogether. Remember, flatter your figure. Larger upper-body
frames will balance best with wider legged bottoms. This may not
be the best news if you are large busted or plus-size. It's
better to know now and choose a more flattering style to keep
looking your personal best.

Happy skinnies hunting, or moving on . . . , whichever it is.
The great truth here is that the best fashion trend is one that
actually works best for you and your bod. Shed no tears if the
skinny is not for you. You can always splurge on the shoes!

On Your Feet All Day?

When it comes to working all day long standing on your feet
nothing is more important then to have the right pair of shoes.

No matter if you are a Nurse, Doctor, or a Chef for that matter,
if your feet hurt then you are running at 75% of your
possibilities.

The buying of proper shoes for any of these professionals, or
any other for that matter that needs to spend more time on their
feet, then they care too, is an absolute must.

Traditionally the Nursing field have used the good old clunky
shoes of the past, setting them apart from other professions by
just wearing this one type of footwear.

But times have changed, you now see them wearing anything from
cheap plastic clogs made God knows where, to regular sneakers,
not considering the fact that in order to look stylish they are
giving up comfort, and possible future problems with their feet

Some of my wife's closest friends are in the nursing field and

When your day is done, walk in to your friendly shoe store, and
have them measure your feet. This is the best time to get a real
true size of your feet. You want to measure them when they are
swollen, tired and smelly. We all try our shoes on when it's a
fun day at the shopping mall, we are fresh, rested, and in the
mood of spending money, after all, we just got paid. Wrong time
to do it.

The thing to realize (and I'm sure you do) is that when you
spend more time on your feet then your butt, you MUST take care
of them

. It doesn't have to cost a fortune. There are quality products
out there still made the old fashion way, leather instead of
plastic, inner soles that work with your feet, because they are
made of leather. Shop carefully out there; there are some great
quality products that no one has discovered yet, and they are
more affordable then you think. Not all of them are made in

What do denim, a white shirt and the "little black dress" have
in common? Each is easy to wear and can be worn by everyone.
Classic material and designs make these pieces essential in the

The word Denim originated from, "de Nimes", a little town in the
south of France, where the cloth was originally woven and dyed
indigo. In 1850, Levi Strauss started supplying gold miners with
pants made of denim. The waist overalls Strauss created were so
strong and durable they were nearly indestructible. These
garments were nicknamed jeans.

The 1930's saw an explosion of western movies, with Cowboys clad
in jeans. During WWII, soldiers had sported jeans in their off
duty time, taking the fad worldwide. After the war, new
manufacturers of denim clothing entered the market, with Lee and
Wrangler competing with Levi for popularity. The youth of the
1950's loved jeans but the older crowd felt that it was a symbol
of the rebel. This fuss assured the popularity of denim.

By the 1960's, the free to wear what you want decade, most
everyone liked them. In the 1970's designers came out with the
slim cut, boot cut, tight jean, baggy jean, hip-hugger, Capri
length... the list goes on. Women established the denim jean as

wasn't just used for pants - skirts, dresses, jumpsuits,
jackets, coats, vests and shirts became popular in the 1980's.

trying to look good, we just do".

The White Shirt

The modern white collared cotton shirt was born in the 1920's
when the Prince of Wales (later the Duke of Windsor) was seen
everywhere in a shirt with soft turned down collars. The
previous decades of stated stiff, high, detachable collars were
gone for good. It was much better to appear to be able to afford
a fresh clean shirt everyday rather than just a fresh clean
collar. At this time, the white shirt went with business suits,
not casual wear.

In the 1950's the white shirt made its appearance as a button
down style collared shirt. Women began wearing oversized men's

though trendsetters like Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn

A Brief History Of The Cowboy Boot

Historically horsemen have always needed protective footwear as
well as preferring boots with a higher heel. The origin of the
cowboy boot that we know today comes from various boot styles
including the Wellington boot, which originated from Britain's
Duke of Wellington. At the time it was a straight plain leather
boot with one-inch heels and straight tops. Cowboys also wore
the Hessian boot, which had a V-cut in the front, and some of
these had a silk or leather tassel hanging down in the V.

The Coffeyville-style cowboy boots originated in Coffeyville,
Kansas around 1870 and were normally black leather with a low
Cuban heel. The front of the boot, known as the "graft", was
higher than the back and was usually a different color. Texas
cowboys were known to have a lone star inlaid in the graft.

Cowboy boots continued to evolve through the late 1800s and the
designs were influenced by the European cavalier style of boot,
which were characterized by higher heels and better-quality
leather.

The toes of cowboy boots were square or rounded and this did not
change to pointed until the 1950s.

The straight lines of stitches across the top of the toe of the
cowboy boot are called a toe wrinkle. Boot makers in the early
1900s started to add decorative stitching on the toes in
addition to the wrinkle and these designs became and have
remained to this day the personalized signature of custom-made
boots.

In the 1920s and 1930s cowboy boots became a fashion item as a
result of the movies and radio shows about the Wild West.

After 1940 boot designs became more colorful and intricate
incorporating images of the west such as cacti, eagles, horses
and horseshoes.

In the 1950s when rodeos became a popular form of entertainment
and country music started being heard, the popularity of cowboy
boots skyrocketed and millions of pairs were reportedly being
made in all shapes, colors and styles.

After this the designs of cowboy boots followed the fashions and
styles popularized in the movies - if John Travolta or Tom
Cruise wore cowboy boots then those styles were immediately in
demand.

Since the early 1990s boot makers have become even more
adventurous and we are now seeing styles incorporating studs,
conchos, rhinestones and precious stones, no doubt partly as a
result of the interest in line dancing. Of course it is still
possible to buy an attractive plain leather boot.

Part of the enduring appeal of the cowboy boot is that they can
be worn by anyone.

Online shopping is an alien experience!

This article proposes a human, rather than technical, basis for
the design of shopping websites. It suggests an approach that:
reflects real world shopping principles; allows shoppers to
complete familiar tasks and procedures; reassures shoppers that
their purchasing decisions are sound; is based on non-technical
shoppers' needs and abilities.

My wife and I are English. We've just moved to Holland, a lovely
country, albeit a country that is alien to us. Yesterday, we
went shopping locally for a new pair of work shoes for my wife.
As we were going into unknown and unfamiliar territory, it
occurred to me that the experience was similar to non-technical
people shopping online for the first time. Since I run a
shopping website, I decided to record our experiences, to see
what I could learn about good site design and best practice.

My wife is a skilled, real world shopper. The first thing she
did, therefore, was to make a mental list of what kind of shoes
she needed: 'must have' attributes, 'could have' attributes,
acceptable price ranges and possible brands. The list was not
overly specific initially, to provide flexibility. It read
something like this: brown, leather uppers, flat heels, wide
fitting, plain styling, up to 60 Euros, Hush Puppies.

We arrived in our nearest Dutch town and started to shop. Like
the Internet to non-technical people, this was a new, exciting
and yet daunting shopping environment. We had no idea: which
shops we'd encounter, which order we'd encounter them in, or in
which shop we might be the most successful. When we saw a Dolcis
store, a brand we were familiar with in England, we felt
reassured and entered. This was less alien territory, which
seemed to offer us a degree of security.

The next thing we did was to head for the women's shoes. As in
most shops, Dolcis' goods were grouped geographically, according
to an implicit logic. The grouping allowed us to bypass the
winter boots, even though my wife has (lower priority) winter
boot needs. As we passed by, I sensed that she made brief mental
notes about winter boot features and benefits, for future
shopping trips.

Arriving at the women's shoes, we found goods displayed in a
uniform fashion, with similar offers positioned side-by-side, to
facilitate rapid comparison. From any viewing angle we chose, we
could evaluate easily the shoes in relation to one another.
Because the shoes were all one size and the lighting was good,
we could appreciate quickly relative dimensions, shapes and
colours.

Having ignored shoes that didn't meet my wife's 'must have'
attributes, or price and brand parameters, the next step was to
touch the remaining, short-listed shoes. At this stage, we
wanted to conduct very close, almost intimate inspections. We
wanted to 'tumble' each contender in our hands. We wanted to
appreciate the raw materials used, to smell and feel the
leather. We wanted to know the standard of workmanship, as well
as any potential design or manufacturing flaws.

This, clearly, was a key, kinaesthetic stage in real world shoe
shopping. We wanted to taste the physical attributes of each
potential purchase. Not only did we want to know tangible facts,
like weight and volume, we wanted to judge intangibles too, like
whether the shoes would 'go' aesthetically with various
trousers, skirts and dresses already in my wife's wardrobe.

Once the tumbling stage was over, another important stage began:
trying pairs of shoes on, to see how well the selected styles
fitted. With each style being physically different to the other,
it was vital to ensure a good degree of comfort. My wife walks
many kilometres at work and, to compound our shoe-buying
problems, she has different size feet! The ideal shoes had to be
practicable therefore, in a variety of weather conditions.

I must say that the shop assistant was very helpful and
informative, so much so that we were able to reject several
contenders and reach a final decision. Since the price of the
chosen shoes was acceptable and the service had been good, we
didn't feel the need to look for cheaper offers in other shops.
That was it then; the decision was made. All that remained was
to take our purchase to the check out.

At this time, the assistant tried valiantly to sell us a range
of ancillary products that would enhance our purchase. These
products were recommended by the manufacturer and other
shoppers, apparently. We declined politely and handed over a
credit card, entered a PIN and picked up the shoes, now in shiny
packaging. The Dolcis carrier bag allowed us to show-off our
purchase to other shoppers and added to our sense of wellbeing:
we had just met an important need! Our satisfaction was enhanced
by the knowledge that we could return the shoes for a full
refund, if they were unsuitable or unsatisfactory.

So, what can shopping website designers learn from this analysis
of one, real world shopping trip? Despite the lack of scientific
and statistical rigour, I suggest the following:

* Allow shoppers to make a list of what they need, even if it's
just a general statement of: what the goods must do for them,
what constitutes an acceptable price range and how long they're
prepared to wait for delivery.

* Allow shoppers to enter the size, colour and number of goods
they are looking for too. Shoppers usually know such matters
from the outset and the data entry gains commitment.

* List clothing sizes in the various ways used around the globe
(see more on sizing below).

* If requested by the shopper, use this information helpfully,
to suggest interesting options.

* Promote brands, whether they are familiar High Street brands,
or new brands. Whatever you do, promote brands. They encourage
feelings of safety and security, confidence in short.

* Help shoppers to search for and find what they need quickly
and easily, whether this is by text-entry into a search engine
or by exploring logical classifications.

* By all means, briefly show shoppers other goods that may
interest them now or in the future, whilst they are 'on their
way to' the goods they are looking for.

* When they arrive, display goods initially in a uniform manner
that enhances the commodity and is acceptable to shoppers. For
example, shoes might be displayed as if shoppers were looking at
them from the front, right hand side and slightly above.

* Show the nearest similar goods alongside each offer, so
shoppers don't waste time looking too narrowly and, possibly,
buying the wrong goods. I suggest a maximum of five options on
screen.

* Illustrate or photograph goods to very high standards, in ways
that make clear function and form. Ideally, allow shoppers to
see true colour alternatives, as they would appear in
daylight.

* Tell shoppers the price of goods, ideally including taxes and
delivery charges; also tell them the current stock levels and
delivery times. Be honest, don't leave nasty surprises until the
check out.

* Allow shoppers to explore potential purchases in three
dimensions, to see what goods look like from different
perspectives and in different modes. At least offer them front,
side and top/bottom views, as well as the chance to zoom in and
zoom out.

* List the raw materials used to produce goods, explain the
method of manufacture and state the quality assurance methods.
Describe finished goods in terms of features and benefits to
shoppers.

* List too physical parameters, using metric measurements.
Metric is the future.

* Include non-standard, but nonetheless useful, measurements
too: measurements that allow shoppers to judge the likelihood of
physical 'fit' in their homes. Compensate for the fact that
shoppers can't try things on and avoid the hassle of having to
return ridiculously unsuitable items.

* Include manufacturers' names and model numbers. More
importantly, because these descriptors can be spelt in numerous
ways, include the barcode number. With this unique, standard
number to hand, shoppers could find the best deals online
easily.

* Offer access to a knowledgeable online shop assistant, ideally
a real-time 'live' assistant, rather than one available by
e-mail. A freephone number is worth consideration, as long as
shop assistants speak suitable languages, aren't automated and
'pick-up' telephones quickly.

* Show related purchases at the check out only. Don't confuse or
agitate shoppers by presenting too many potential add-ons, or
upgrades too early in the buying process.

* Make checking out swift and simple. Resist the temptation to
collect personal details that shoppers find intrusive,
questionable or irksome. All you really need are the card and
delivery details.

* Ensure that your fulfilment process is swift and sure.
Shoppers like to have goods in their hands within days (ideally
hours) of making cash and time investments.

* Ensure that your returns procedure is equally proficient.
Shoppers will want to return unsuitable or faulty goods with
minimal fuss and to receive card refunds as quickly as
possible.

By understanding how real people shop in real shops, we can do
much to promote online shopping. I fear that too many online
shops are designed around current technologies, in ways that
de-skill proficient real world shoppers with cash to spend. The
time has come, I suggest, to base shopping websites on shoppers'
needs and abilities and to adapt the technology accordingly.

I don't believe there should be such a thing as a 'work shoe'!
Think about it. Why should there have to be a particular style,
colour or design that only suits work? The work shoe is a look
that has been created by office professionals, companies and
society. It's a shoe that fits into an image and that image is
plain, dark and not at all flattering!

I've done it myself. For the office, whether you agree or not,
you need to look professional and smart. Personally, I think you
need to be comfortable. What do you look for when you choose a
shoe? Maybe a heel but it will always be pretty plain and
probably dark.

What about colours? Now I know you maybe can't go to the office
looking smart with a bright orange or turquoise pair of shoes
shouting from the bottom of your legs. But you can, choose shoes
that not only make you look fabulous but still fit into the
smart professional look.

Before I go any further, always try to choose leather or suede
shoes. This is particularly important for work because synthetic
materials will make your feet sweat more. Canvas or other fabric
just won't work with smarter clothes, keep them for the casual
look.

Here's some ideas on colours to choose:- Red looks fantastic
worn with cream or black coloured clothes. Green is the most
soothing, calming and easy on the eye colour, of any colour in
the spectrum. But do be careful with the outfit you choose to
match. Everyone should own at least one pair of black shoes.
Black works with everything you wear. Black does not have to be
boring. Black shoes with diamantes, studs, buckles or beads can
add a hint of glamour. Brown or earthy tones look good with
similar coloured clothes. Pink. Maybe you think it's not
suitable for work? Maybe not hot pink, but a delicate rose or
baby pink works well with a matching shirt or blouse and a dark
suit. Blue - never wear blue with black. You will take yourself
back to 1980 and although retro is quite in fashion, this combo
doesn't work well. Navy is just navy. It works best only with
white. White - during Spring and Summer white works well with
just about any colour. Try not to mix too many colours at once
though!

Now you have an idea on colour think about styles. Heels are
always a good option because they give you so many benefits. A
little height, great posture. Remember though, you are likely to
be wearing them all day so you're probably better off opting for
only a couple of inches in height, at most. Wedge heels are an
absolute must for this summer. They are very fashionable, have
all the advantages of a heel but are far easier to walk in and
far more comfortable. They come in many colours and fabrics, so
you'll be sure to match some with something.

Round or open-toed shoes with a wedge heel and ankle strap look
fabulous with a knee length skirt. Pointed toes lengthen your
overall look whether worn with trousers or a skirt, therefore
give the illusion of greater height. Kitten heels are great to
wear for work because they only have a 1 or 2 inch heel. They
are comfortable, but look chic and stylish. Choose a different
colour with perhaps a buckle or strap detail across the front,
to add interest. Always choose a kitten heeled shoe with a
pointed toe. This particular style teams well with a skirt or
trousers. If you want to wear a knee high boot, always allow
yourself a little expense. There is nothing worse than cheap
knee high boots. A well made leather pair of knee high boots
will cost you from around £60 upwards. It's worth spending that
little more to get good quality. Cheap knee high boots will make
you look like you are ready to get the whip out and you
certainly don't want to pull that kind of look off whilst you
are at work. If not made of leather, you'll find them sticking
to your legs when you want to get them off! There are times when
its just too hot to wear closed shoes or boots, even in England!
Leather flip flops or flat sandals look really smart and chic
with flared linen trousers. Make sure you've booked that
pedicure! If you are wearing an ankle length skirt, flat
shoes/sandals for summer will work well. If you have a knee
length or shorter skirt go for a wedge or kitten heel.

Avoid teetering high heels with shorter skirts at all costs. You
might have drop dead gorgeous legs, but you'll be terribly
uncomfortable and if you want the smart chic professional look,
this just isn't it. Less is not always more!

Slingback shoes or mules are a good option for warmer weather.
They allow your feet to breathe, team well with trousers or
skirts and they're smart.

Remember, experiment with colour and go for an unusual style or
design. If your outfit is plain an understated, let the world
